Room 414/Room 717 Revisited

Ursula reacts to the lobby’s atmosphere. She likes the reception clerk’s shoes.

Hotel guests come and go. Some check out, and are never seen again by receptionists, household staff and room service personnel. Others return, because there was something about the place’s atmosphere that aroused complex, earthy feelings.

Ospiti d’hotel vanno e vengono. Alcuni dopo il check-out non si fanno mai più vedere dal personale. Altri tornano perché qualche ineffabile elemento nell’atmosfera dello stabile gli suscita emozioni complicate e gradevoli.

Home from home. 414 and 717. Hotel room palindromes. Transient bodies that fit together end-to-end in their own language, in an anonymous clean space that serves as cave, longhouse, igloo, humpy, teepee. Culture no longer matters here. Civilization, its artifacts and discontents, lose their meaning in these rooms.

414 e 717, palindromi d’hotel. Corpi che si conformano l’uno all’altro nel proprio linguaggio, in uno spazio anonimo e pulito che funge da grotta, capannone, iglù, wigwam. La cultura moderna qui non ha valore. La civiltà, i suoi artefatti e disagi, perdono di significato in queste stanze.

A ROOM, A COUPLE/Una stanza, una coppia

In Room 414 we find Hans and Ursula. He's a traveling sales representative. She's a secretary. Hans is married. Not to Ursula. The two of them met at a café near the train station. The pleasant conversation that ensued led to a more intimate encounter. After tonight, they'll never see each other again.

Nella stanza 414 troviamo Hans e Ursula. Lui fa il commesso viaggiatore. Lei fa la segretaria. Hans è sposato. Non con Ursula. Si sono incontrati a un caffè vicino alla stazione ferroviaria. Sguardi e chiacchiere li hanno portati a volere un incontro più intimo. Dopo stasera non si rivedranno mai più.

Room 717 is occupied this evening by Gina and Joe. She's a dancer who appears frequently on TV variety shows. He works at a garage on the edge of town. They get together pretty often, in secret. They're also both married, but not to each other.

There's a palindrome there, somewhere.

La stanza 717 stasera è occupata da Gina e Joe. Lei è una danzatrice che appare spesso in programmi di varietà in tivù. Lui fa il meccanico presso un garage ai margini della città. Si incontrano spesso, in segreto. Sono entrambi sposati, ma non l’una con l’altro.

Gina and Joe usually take their action any place where there's no prying eyes. People talk, and neither of them wants trouble. Public toilets are OK. Cars parked in the green areas beyond municipal limits are better. But tonight’s special. Good news is in the air. Gina got picked to go on tour with a tap-dance show. Joe got a raise at the garage. This calls for a celebration, in a suite, on a high floor, at the Kranepool!

Gina e Joe di solito entrano in azione lontano da occhi indiscreti. La gente parla, ed è meglio evitare guai. I bagni pubblici non sono male. Automobili parcheggiati nei boschi in provincia sono meglio. Ma stasera è speciale. Entrambi hanno avuto buone notizie. Gina è stata selezionata per andare in tournée con uno spettacolo di tip-tap. Joe ha avuto un aumento di stipendio. Bisogna festeggiare, in una suite, su un piano alto, al Kranepool!
