Realizzate mediante lente ed accuratissime stesure di colore sovrapposte, le opere di Tomoko Sugahara trasmettono sempre una serie di radiazioni tranquille. In contrasto con il loro elaborato processo esecutivo –profonda attenzione, gesti ripetuti per settimane, abitudini di lunga durata- i suoi lavori non suggeriscono un senso di fatica o sforzo ma anzi, sorprendentemente, emanano sensazioni di leggerezza e fluidità felice. Sono ritagli di spazio astratto con impatto visivo immediato. Sembrano deserti di ceneri iridescenti, oppure fondali marini. Sono superfici levigate, ma non statiche, al contrario, sono cieli sempre solcati da energie in movimento che producono anche rotture nell'unità della superficie pittorica. Qua e là accadono piccoli incidenti, vortici e macchie, residui di sottili correnti magnetiche.
Made by slow and careful layering of color on top of one another, Tomoko Sugahara's works always convey a series of tranquil radiations. In contrast to their elaborate execution process -deep attention, repeated gestures over weeks, long-lasting habits- her works do not suggest a sense of fatigue or effort but rather, surprisingly, emanate feelings of lightness and happy fluidity. They are abstract cutouts of space with immediate visual impact. They look like deserts of iridescent ash, or seabeds. They are smooth surfaces, but not static; on the contrary, they are skies always furrowed by moving energies that also produce ruptures in the unity of the pictorial surface. Here and there little accidents happen, swirls and spots, remnants of subtle magnetic currents.

TOMOKO SUGAHARA è nata a Tokyo nel 1963. Laureata in pittura presso la Tokyo National University of fine Arts and Music nel 1988, successivamente ha ottenuto un master in Belle Arti con specializzazione in pittura murale, affresco e mosaico, presso la stessa Università. Ha soggiornato a lungo in Italia, studiando presso L’Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze. Attualmente collabora con varie Università giapponesi insegnando pittura e tecniche del mosaico.
TOMOKO SUGAHARA was born in Tokyo in 1963. She received a bachelor's degree in painting from Tokyo National University of fine Arts and Music in 1988, and later obtained a master's degree in fine arts with a specialization in mural painting, fresco and mosaic at the same university. She stayed in Italy for a long time, studying at L'Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. He currently collaborates with various Japanese universities teaching painting and mosaic techniques.
